"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose."
— Dr. Seuss
At some point, most children encounter emotional challenges — whether related to anxiety, sadness, anger, social difficulties, or adjusting to difficult life changes. Often, families manage these challenges with their own strengths and support systems. But sometimes those resources aren't enough, and outside support from a highly trained child psychologist in Calgary can make all the difference.
Dr. Kincade provides individual therapy for children in Calgary, drawing on over two decades of clinical experience and a deep understanding of child development. Her approach is warm, playful, and always tailored to the child — because no two kids are the same.
I believe we are all like coins. On one side are the qualities that represent our greatest strengths — the things we are proud of and the things that help us succeed. On the other side of the exact same coin are our greatest challenges. But we cannot have our greatest strengths without our greatest challenges. In therapy, my role is to help children uncover and understand both sides of who they are, so they can channel their qualities in the way that is best for them.
For children, one of the most important skills we can build is resilience. Emotions and thoughts are like waves — sometimes calm and manageable, sometimes pounding and overwhelming. The goal isn't to control thoughts and feelings — it's to make conscious, values-driven choices about how we respond to them. That is where real growth happens.
Dr. Kincade's child therapy is rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — two of the most well-researched and effective approaches for children, adapted to be playful and developmentally appropriate.
Sessions often incorporate play, art, storytelling, and hands-on activities to make therapy feel accessible and meaningful for kids.
Dr. Kincade may spend one or two brief sessions with a child to build a foundation, then works primarily with parents — helping them develop confidence and consistency at home.
More one-on-one time building real skills — using age-appropriate techniques and language, making sure therapy never feels like another chore.
